About Sevastopol

Sevastopol is a city of the wonderful destiny and history. It was founded in 1783 as a naval fortress and got the name of Sevastopol which in Greek means a city worth of worship.

It was chosen as a navy base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet because of many big and calm bays around the area. The city grew quickly and always was military.

During the Soviet era, no foreigners were allowed anywhere in this area. Now the Russian and Ukrainian navies share the base. There is an interesting Navy Museum and an Aquarium. To the north-west there is a long beach, Plazh Omega. At night the bars and restaurants along the beach are very lively.

On a peninsula, just outside the city, you will find the well preserved ruins of a large Greek city Chersonese Taurica, founded 500 B.C., it was an independent Greek city-state. After conversion to Christianity it became a Byzantine republic until destroyed by the Tatars in 1299. The ruins are being restored and preserved as a National Monument.

The city has justified its proud name; it has become a symbol of military valor and unexampled heroism.

There were two terrible wars: Crimean war in 1854-55 and WW2 and both times Sevastopol had heroic defenses. There are some places linked with Crimean war and most impressive is Panorama - great picture about the war. There are also many of monuments about WW2. Sevastopol was completely destroyed during the last war and all buildings in downtown were build in 1944-1954 years.
Now Sevastopol is a city with a population of less than half a million people. It is located along the south west coast of the Crimea. About 70 km away from Simferopol. The Black Sea fleet, battles and victories, tragic and heroic events are the history of Sevastopol.

Its landscapes are picturesque and unique.
Sevastopol is a city of modern industry, shipbuilding, science and tourism.

Here is the home of 3 universities: Sevastopol National Technical University, Sevastopol Institute of Nuclear Energy and Industry, and Moscow State University Black Sea campus.
